What do we mean when we say 'local'?

In early 2020, I developed and presented a participatory workshop with Hilary King, Yulia Chuvileva, and Cicely Garret for the Georgia Organics Conference in Athens, GA. With our audience of farmers market managers, grocery buyers, and food system organization staff, we mapped the different meanings that people attribute to the idea of "local" foods and created strategies to build across differences to further our shared goals of a more resilient and just food system. We worked with RIVA Illustrations to distill the workshop's key outcomes into a visual format and are bringing the workshop to additional food systems audiences.
